Last time I spoke about the characteristics of imposter syndrome but how do you actually identify if you have it?
It is thought that around 70% of people will experience imposter syndrome at least once in their lifetime.
It’s not uncommon for someone who’s been recently promoted, started a successful business or even thinking about going for a promotion or starting a business to get imposter syndrome.
Negative thinking and self-doubt are common for us every day but imposter syndrome is much more than that, it’s a recognised disorder but it can be treated and you can overcome it!
A lot of people suffer with imposter syndrome if they come from a family of high achievers, the pressure is on for them to do the same. Or maybe your parents really valued achievement as the be all and end all, you may have had a lot of praise for your achievements but also a lot of criticism.
Imposter syndrome also has close links to social anxiety, not everyone who has imposter syndrome will have social anxiety and vice versa but sometimes you may notice that you have a lack of confidence and have similar feelings in social situations.
To identify imposter syndrome try answering honestly these questions.
Do you get very sensitive to criticism even if it’s constructive?
Do you think that one day you will be found out as a fraud and that will be the end of your job?
Do you focus on all your flaws and any little mistakes you make?
Do you think you just got ‘lucky’ to be where you are and it was just by chance you got there?
Do you always downplay your skills and abilities?
If you’ve answered yes to these questions it’s highly likely that you are suffering from imposter syndrome.
Please do get in touch if you need to talk and find out how I can help.
